Paro
1] Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Taktsang) – the iconic cliffside temple. It is one of thirteen Tiger’s Nest caves in historical Tibet in which Padmasambhava practiced and taught Vajrayana. A later monastery complex was built in 1692 by 4th Druk Desi Tenzin Rabgey around the Taktsang SengeSamdup cave, where Guru Padmasambhava meditated and practiced with students including YesheTsogyal before departing the kingdom of Tibet in the early 9th century. Today, Paro Taktsang is the best known of the thirteen taktsang or “tiger lair” caves in which he and his students meditated.
2] National Museum– Established in 1968, in the renovated ancient Ta Dzong building, above RinpungDzong under the command of His Majesty, the King Jigme DorjiWangchuck, the third hereditary Monarch of Bhutan. Today, the National Museum has in its possession over 3,000 works of Bhutanese art, covering more than 1,500 years of Bhutan’s cultural heritage. Its rich holdings of various creative traditions and disciplines, represent a remarkable blend of the past with the present and is a major attraction for local and foreign visitors.
3] Paro Dzong and riverside walks – RinpungDzong, sometimes referred to as Paro Dzong, is a large dzong – Buddhist monastery and fortress – of the Drukpa Lineage of the Kagyu school in Paro District, Bhutan. It houses the district Monastic Body as well as government administrative offices of Paro Dzongkhag. It is listed as a tentative site in Bhutan’s Tentative List for UNESCO inclusion.
Thimphu
1] Buddha Dordenma — one of the world’s largest Buddha statues. Great Buddha Dordenma is a gigantic Shakyamuni Buddha statue in the mountains of Bhutan celebrating the 60th anniversary of fourth king Jigme SingyeWangchuck.
2] TashichhoDzong – TashichhoDzong is a large fortress and monastery in Thimphu, Bhutan, that serves as the seat of the government and houses the King’s offices, the throne room, and the Central Monastic Body. It is a prominent symbol of Bhutan’s government and culture, known for its intricate architecture, golden roofs, and role as a venue for important festivals and ceremonies.
3] Local artisan shops and weekend market – For local artisan shops and weekend markets in Thimphu, visit the Centenary Farmers Market for local produce and handicrafts, which runs Thursday through Sunday. The Norzin Lam area offers a variety of shops, restaurants, and is a popular street for local shopping. You can also find numerous shops for authentic souvenirs like prayer flags, woven textiles, and wooden items throughout the city.
Punakha
1] Stunning Punakha Dzong – The Punakha Dzong, also known as Pungthang Dewa ChhenbiPhodrang, is the administrative centre of Punakha District in Punakha, Bhutan. Constructed by NgawangNamgyal, 1st Zhabdrung Rinpoche, in 1637–38, it is the second oldest and second-largest dzong in Bhutan and one of its most majestic structures.
2] Longest suspension bridge in Bhutan- Punakha Suspension Bridge is the longest suspension bridge in Bhutan measuring 180 m in length. From the bridge, you can get a spectacular view of the Po Chhu .
3] Scenic rice paddy fields and river valleys- Punakha is known for its scenic rice paddy fields and river valleys, particularly the fertile Punakha Valley, which is often called the “breadbasket of Bhutan” due to its subtropical climate and low altitude.

1] Home to endangered black-necked cranes- The Punakha region is the main wintering ground for the endangered black-necked crane in Bhutan, arriving in the Phobjikha Valley and celebrated with the Gangtey Crane Festival.
